How to plant and initially care for plants in a hydroponic flower pot?

Publish Time: 2024-12-16
The hydroponic flower pot provides a unique environment for plant growth. Correct planting and initial maintenance are essential for the healthy growth of plants.

First, choosing the right plant is the key. Not all plants are suitable for hydroponics. Generally speaking, plants with strong adaptability such as green radish, spider plant, and pennywort are more suitable. Select plants with well-developed root systems, no pests and diseases, and strong growth, so that they can adapt to the new environment more easily during the hydroponic conversion process.

Before planting, the plant roots should be treated. Gently wash the soil on the roots, and the action must be gentle to avoid damaging the roots. For some overlong or rotten roots, sterilized scissors are needed for pruning. After pruning, the roots can be soaked in potassium permanganate solution or carbendazim solution for a period of time for sterilization and disinfection to prevent the growth of pathogens in the hydroponic environment.

Prepare the hydroponic flower pot and a suitable planting basket or planting cotton. Carefully place the treated plant roots in the planting basket, fix the plant with planting cotton, ensure that it stands stably in the flowerpot, and the roots naturally droop in the water storage cavity. If planting cotton is used, be careful not to wrap it too tightly to avoid affecting the root breathing.

Inject an appropriate amount of water or nutrient solution. The water level added for the first time should not be too high, generally one-third to one-half of the root system is appropriate. If nutrient solution is used, it needs to be diluted and prepared according to the product instructions to avoid damage to the root system due to excessive concentration. For example, for common foliage plant nutrient solution, it can be diluted 500-1000 times before use.

In the early stage after planting, the hydroponic flower pot should be placed in a suitable environment. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in high temperatures in summer, strong sunlight may make the water temperature too high and scald the roots. Choose a bright diffuse light environment, such as a location close to a window but blocked by curtains. At the same time, keep the ambient temperature between 15-25℃. Too high or too low temperature is not conducive to plant growth.

Pay close attention to changes in water quality and change water regularly. In the early stage, change the water every 3-5 days. When changing the water, clean the flower pot and the root system to remove impurities and algae that may be attached. As the plant growth gradually stabilizes, the water change cycle can be appropriately extended.

In the initial maintenance stage, you also need to pay attention to the growth of the plant. Observe whether the leaves are yellowing, withering, etc. If abnormalities are found, check whether the roots are diseased or whether the nutrient solution lacks certain elements in time, and take appropriate remedial measures. For example, if the leaves turn yellow, it may be due to iron deficiency. You can add trace element fertilizers such as chelated iron in appropriate amounts. Through careful planting and initial maintenance, a good foundation is laid for the healthy growth of hydroponic plants.
